In 1961, Bob Dylan, an unknown 19-year-old, arrives in New York City with his guitar. He builds relationships with Greenwich Village music icons during his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that resonates around the world. Honestly, I had very low expectations for a “complete unknown.” Making a biopic about a living person, and one as specific and unique as Bob Dylan, was meant to be nothing more than a caricature. But somehow, Timothée transformed and became Dylan so organically and effortlessly. Dylan’s early twenties, when the world was starting to know him as well as he did himself, was well-rounded. I enjoyed the humor in the script, our audience had a few genuine laughs throughout the 2 hour runtime. Monica Barbaro playing Joan was a breath of fresh air! I hope she gets the praise she deserves for this and other opportunities in the future. Elle Fanning was a slightly disappointing choice for a character based on Suze Rotolo who Bob said was this breathtaking and striking woman. I didn’t feel like Elle was doing her best, she was too Elle Fanning. However, my favorite role had to be Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. I don’t know the real Pete Seeger so I can’t compare, but Edward Norton did a fantastic job in the movie. I probably won’t watch this movie again, but walking out of the theater had a nice aftertaste of the honor of leaving Bob as a legacy. Dylan will (and has) gone into this world. Timmy deserves an Oscar nomination and recognition for this role. I’m very curious to compare this to the Bruce Springsteen biopic with Jeremy Allen White when it comes out.
